APEALING LIES by Cathy D. Slaght
Imagine having to market Monsanto. Pick your campaign:
1. "Take a food and inject it with a virus or bacteria then saturate it with poisons. It's good for you!"
2. "The rats weren't really damaged that much, just a few tumors, hair in their mouths, and some birth defects in their offspring"
3. "Without this technology billions of people will die."
Yes, #3 is profoundly brilliant, an excellent marketing campaign. It gets right into your heart. A good talking point is golden rice.
Tell people- or your readers if you happen to be a reporter who researched for a year to provide misinformation- about how the environmentalists are causing 50,000 kids a year to go blind. These kids don't have enough vitamin A in their diet, and Monsanto wants to genetically modify rice so it has beta carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A. Who could possibly be against this? Monsanto says environmentalists enjoy having blind people in the world.
What they DON'T say is they haven't even put golden rice together yet! Golden rice is complex and unpredictable. There are 70 different patents involved. One, for example, involves putting antibiotic resistant bacteria in the rice. With so many infections it's a good idea to put this in the world's largest staple?
I'm no chemist, but I can read, and this is what I learned: When you put beta carotene into the rice it is attached to something that turns on a gene . BUT- you don't know which gene it's going to land on. This is observable, genuine. You may not get beta carotene at all, it's that unpredictable. Not only that, once it's there, it will transfer from generation to generation, but who knows which gene will be turned on? And once the GMO contamination process is started, it's there forever, unlike chemicals, which dissipate over time.
Just like when GM corn came out- a silent gene got turned on and created a toxin that has never existed in the history of the world.
Then there's the fact that a child, age 2, would need 7lb a day of the rice to get enough vitamin A from it. Plus, even if golden rice were a reality malnourished people would absorb it poorly because they would be lacking micronutrients. Plus, we don't know if genetically rice would even have any nutrients- GMO corn and soy poorly absorb nutrients. For example, non genetic corn has 437% more calcium and 56% more magnesium.
There are solutions available for the blindness, but Monsanto isn't interested in that. It's really all about profit.
