GREAT LIGHTS PUT OUT BY ADDICTION by Cathy D. Slaght
Sugar may not be considered a drug, but studies show heroin and cocaine are less addictive than Oreos. So, let’s talk about addiction to illegal drugs, and see if there’s any relation to our craving for sugary, processed foods. It’s 100 years since hard core drugs were first banned in the USA. Addicts were punished, made to suffer, because it was believed that would deter them. Obviously, it didn’t work. (why do we still carry on with this approach when this is so obvious?) It didn’t work because it turns out addiction is caused by lack of happiness and connection. NO! you say- it’s related to brain chemistry! And wasn’t there something about the PANCREAS? But what if addiction- heroin OR Oreos, were an adaptation to environment? What if it is about bonding? For example, in Vietnam 20% of all American troops used heroin. BUT 95% stopped when they returned home and reconnected with their loved ones. Then there’s Portugal- Portugal had one of the worst drug problems in Europe. They tried punishment, stigma, shame, but problems got worse, not better. They decided to set up a panel of scientists and doctors to see if there was a better approach. Based on new evidence, they decriminalized all drugs. They then took the money used to punish addicts and spent it on reconnecting them to society. There were loans for them to start a business, or go to school, etc. Basically, they made sure every addict had something to get out of bed for. As they rediscovered their purpose, they stopped doing drugs. Point is, when we can bond and connect, we’re happy. Maybe this even applies to sugar/food addiction. We turn to substance when we cannot bear to be present in our own life. So now let’s look at how this could relate to the Pancreas. Chinese Medicine teaches: The person who suffers from high blood sugar or diabetes feels they have not received love, that they were not loved enough. The person who has low blood sugar/hypoglycemia feels he does not deserve the love of others. (this may not be evident on a conscious level, but could be going on subconsciously.) This is what they found (in Portugal) to be true when they did the research on addiction. It’s all about connections and YES- the health of the pancreas ties in. When the pancreas isn’t functioning correctly there seems to be a resulting lack of connection, imagined or otherwise. So, today I’m going to get some blueberries, a sweet potato, broccoli sprouts and spinach to eat over the next few days. I’d already purchased some Tumeric Root powder to start drinking Tumeric water every morning, but it looks vile so have procrastinated. And one last thought- for today- We are one of the loneliest societies that has ever existed. Could this be related to the disintegration of the family unit? AND/OR are we trading STUFF for connections? Are we living isolated lives because we have such entertainment at home in the form of the TV or computer? It’s something to think about. If you have a crisis, it will be your family, plus “flesh and blood friends”- not Twitter, FB, TV or anything found on www.youtube.com – that will love you, whatever state you’re in. If you need your family/true friends they’ll come. Just make sure they don’t bring any Oreos.
