LOVE FROM THE CENTER OF WHO YOU REALLY ARE by Cathy D. Slaght
For the final post of 2017, here's a story that, for me, spoke. See what you think. This isn't a Fractal Fairy Tale... it comes from The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss. I've shortened it...here goes... ...There is a place known as Faerinel. There are two things that make it unique. First, it is where all the roads in the world meet. Second, it is not a place any person has ever found by searching. It's just a place you pass through while on the way to somewhere else. There are no inns, just clearings where those passing through set up camp to get through the night. Late one night an old man in a tattered robe was traveling through.. He moved slowly, with a walking stick. If you had asked him who he was he would have said “Nobody”. He was hungry, and weary to the bones. All that kept him moving was the hope that someone would give him something to eat and a spot near their fire for the night. So, when he saw firelight flickering, he left the main road and made his weary way towards it. He saw a number of horses. Silver was worked into their harnesses, and mules were nearby, loaded with fabrics and jewelry. But what caught his attention was a side of meat roasting above a giant campfire. “Halloo” he said. “Can you spare a bit of meat and a piece of your fire?” “You will find no comfort here” was the reply. At the next clearing were 4 men, standing around a dead donkey that was lying near a cart. One of them spotted the old man and said “Grab him! We'll hitch him to the cart and make him pull!” The old man darted back into the trees and hid under some leaves After some time he moved on, and thought he had found what he'd been looking for. Around a fire were some traders from a city he had visited many times. People there knew him to be a good man. But by this point he was quite a sight. His hair stuck from his head in wild disarray. His robe, ragged before, was now tattered and dirty. The traders gasped and made gestures before their faces- they thought he was one of the unquiet dead that sometimes roamed the forest. He hurried away. Finding a rock to sit on, he brushed the dirt and dead leaves away as best he could, and decided to try one final campsite. He was pleased to see an Amyr...a member of the church of Tehlu. This was a church that was known as being generous to the poor. “Sir”, he said, I'm just hoping for some charity on a long road” The Amyr said ”I'm afraid I can't offer you anything to eat. My horse eats better than I do. “Anything would be a lovely help”, the old man said, “scraps are more than what I have.” But the Amyr refused. Tightening his belt, the old man made up his mind to walk till morning. Soon he came to a circle of huge gray stones. Inside was the glow of a fire, but no smoke. AND, as he came closer, he saw that the shapes were not stones, they were wagons. A handful of people were huddled around a cook pot. He no longer had hope, so kept walking. But a voice called out “Ho there! Who are you, and why do you pass by so quietly at night?” “I'm nobody”, the old man said. “Just an old beggar, following the road to the end.” “But these roads are not safe at night”, came the reply. The man behind the voice walked up, took his elbow, and led him to the fire. “We have a guest tonight, he announced. Curious, the old man asked “why do you hide your fire?” The reply: “ We are the Edena Ruh. Not all are not filled with love for us. We're safest by not drawing attention to ourselves.” (Edena Ruh was an early term for gypsys.) Then he brought out water, wine, and food. The old man began to weep softly. “you have been kinder to me than anyone in years, and I am sorry I cannot pay you.” “Would you really like to pay?” said his host. We are the Edenuh Ruh. What we value most is something everyone possesses, their story. You could tell us your story.” So he did. The Edenuh Ruh listened, transfixed. At the end, the host asked “Would you consider traveling with us? You belong in our family, No, your blood is not our blood, but that does not matter. The old man lived with them for many years. AND no, it didn't turn out he ever had anything to offer but his stories. A possible moral- from time to time we may all experience a passageway such as Faerinel. It could be that the purpose is to discover a powerful, unconditional love that is the center of who we really are. And, of course, we're ALL family. Happy New Year!
