THE ADVENTURES OF ZIPPY THE SLUG Part I by Cathy D. Slaght

(not an easy beginning, but essential)

Life was nothing but a blur…day in, day out…

… watching out for feet/wheels, avoiding predators, grabbing sustenance in whatever way possible…

And then one day something picked him UP- .it was TERRIFYING- and carried him off.

After a short time, he was dropped on to a table, making a loud THUNK.

(He was apparently incapable of making any other sound, as he was some sort of fat and slimy BLOB.)

Faces peered down. “Hello Zippy” he heard.

The memories came flooding back.

At one time he’d been one of those faces – but had committed an act of such evil that he had been transformed- by the BOSS- into the lowliest of creatures.

A SLUG.

(Where the name Zippy came from he had no idea.)

Regardless, he was just a worthless hunk of tissue – now curled up into a BALL- filled with regret.

Then one of the faces said …“Zippy, the BOSS is Pure Love. You remember, right?

He uncurled a bit. Was there hope?

“We have a mission for you. If you succeed, you will be transformed into a higher life form. You are to teach the slugs on this planet to be kind to themselves and one another.”

Zippy rolled back up – but they continued.

“Even in your present state, you are capable of transforming the world. Slugs have very large nerve cells. Plus, there are only 20,000 of them- nerve cells- compared to the 100 billion or so in humans.

As you begin to help the other slugs we will be able to observe how these nerve cells accomplish this.

Your work will then be a blueprint for the restoration of kindness between humans on Planet Earth.

Zippy was incapable of SAYING anything, but gave a slight nod.

Great JOY radiated from the faces.

“ The work with your nerve cells will begin with regenerating the power of compassion.”

Then he was carried to a big white DOOR- which opened to a huge flight of stairs, all spiraling UPWARDS …and placed at the bottom.

AND- he figured out where his name came from.

He was in a zip-lock bag.
