SUGAR IS THE GATEWAY DRUG by Cathy D. Slaght
We have a crisis (opportunity). We’ve been overdosed with sugar. 80% of what we find at the supermarket is sugared up. (This isn’t made clear- even if you try to read the labels, there are 56 different names for sugar.) School food programs are LOADED- 11 teaspoons in the breakfast alone. Meanwhile, we wonder what’s wrong with our kids. Even toddlers are being diagnosed with depression. (lots of sweets at daycare, too.) In many cases, the parents can’t control the violent behavior and/or acting out. We adults can seem a little bat-crazy at times, too. Of course, we’re also enjoying soft drinks, cookies, donuts, bread, chips, ice cream, alcohol and so on- Meanwhile, the relationship between blood sugar and mental illness is documented, but virtually ignored, and our PHYSICAL health has deteriorated to the point that experts warn Medicare will be broke by 2026. Yet the food industry continues to systematically add sugar to most of our food, and the entertainment industry continues to push foods and drinks loaded with it. Where are the protesters? Seriously, get enough protestors together over the sugar in our food and the food industry would CHANGE. (Forget going to the government- over half of Congress takes money from the food industry.) Why aren’t we doing this instead of fighting EACH OTHER over issues that may turn out to be insignificant compared to running out of money for healthcare, which could result in chaos such as we can’t even imagine. Meanwhile, we’re ADDICTED to sugar- so do we even WANT a change? Maybe it’s better to start by first ADDING some foods instead of trying to go cold turkey on sugar. Here are a few that are known to benefit the pancreas:
